If Ratan Tata were here…: Air India crash victims’ lawyer slams payout delay

In a scathing criticism of the prolonged delay in compensating the families of Air India crash victims, the lawyer representing several affected families has lamented what he describes as an “unacceptable and heartbreaking” wait for justice. Speaking to the media, he drew a stark comparison, saying, “If Ratan Tata were here, this wouldn’t have happened. These families would have received both dignity and fair compensation long ago.”

The remarks refer to the tragic Air India Express crash in Kozhikode on August 7, 2020, which claimed 21 lives and injured many others. Despite the incident occurring four years ago, several families are still awaiting their final settlements from the airline and insurers. According to the lawyer, bureaucratic hurdles and drawn-out negotiations have left victims’ families struggling emotionally and financially.

“Some of these families lost their sole breadwinner,” he said. “We’re not talking about charity; we’re talking about lawful compensation they are entitled to. The current pace shows a shocking lack of empathy.”

The pointed mention of Ratan Tata, revered for his humane leadership during crises such as the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the Air India rescue operations in the past, underscores the perception that today’s corporate management lacks the same personal accountability. Tata’s hands-on and compassionate approach, the lawyer implied, would have ensured swifter action and fewer legal battles.

Air India, now owned by the Tata Group following its acquisition in January 2022, has not yet responded to the lawyer’s statement. However, industry insiders suggest the compensation delays stem from complex legal proceedings, disputed claims, and differing interpretations of international aviation compensation laws.

For the grieving families, however, the reasons matter little. As the lawyer summed it up: “Every day of delay adds to their pain. What they need is closure, not endless paperwork.”
